We have a wonderful article about healthy living written by a guest writer this month, Ms. Jennifer McGregor. Her article is titled "Easier Solutions to a Healthier Life."

The year 2021 is still fresh. There’s still time to make meaningful changes to your lifestyle that can leave you healthier and happier than ever before. But rather than setting out to achieve a complete overhaul of your lifestyle, why not try a different approach this time?

Lasting change often comes from taking baby steps. As you make small-but-significant decisions that benefit your health each day, you can set yourself up for better long-term health and well-being. Healthways Medical Group is always looking for ways to help our patients and audience lead healthier lives. That’s why we’ve listed some realistic habits you can begin working into your life today.

Eat a healthy lunch.

Chances are you know that nutrition is critical to your health. While eating a healthy diet can do wonders for your physical, mental, and emotional health, it also happens to be quite challenging, especially when you try to transform it all at once. Forget about committing to an extreme diet.

Set out to change one meal a day. Lunch is ideal because eating a lighter, healthier lunch can provide you with extra energy to get through the rest of the day. Consider prepping salads so that you can just grab them from the fridge. You can either eat them at home or work; either way, it’s easy, budget-friendly, and convenient in the middle of the day. And you’ll be giving your body essential vitamins. Don’t be surprised if the benefits of eating one healthy meal a day inspire you to keep improving your diet!

Improve your home’s atmosphere.

If your home is not a healthy, comfortable place, you need to make some changes. Set aside an hour or two to remove clutter from your living space. Then, take another hour or two to deep clean; you can even do it on a different day if you want. Once you’ve cleaned your home thoroughly, carve out 15 minutes a day for maintaining it. Not only will this make your living environment more enjoyable to live in, but it will also reduce stress and tension for everyone in the home.

Make some moves.

If you find it hard to maintain a consistent fitness routine, you probably haven’t found an exercise that you enjoy. Think of any recreational sports or other physical activities (e.g., jogging, weightlifting, biking, etc.) that you find fun, and make time to do them three days a week. Start with 15 or 20 minutes a session, and work your way up from there.

Ban phones from the bedroom.

For most of us, electronic screens are a major part of our lives. But exposure to blue light from smartphones, tablets, computers, and TV s can make it difficult to get restful sleep. Consider having a no-device policy at bedtime so that you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. While you’re at it, lower the temperature, and find a relaxing activity to do before getting into bed (e.g., meditation, reading, stretches, etc.).

Write your thoughts.

Lastly, get a journal to write in once a day. Putting your thoughts and emotions on paper can significantly benefit your mental health. But you can also use your journal to write out physical health goals and track your progress each day.

You don’t have to keep setting lofty goals that you can’t accomplish. Resolve today to take baby steps toward improving your health and well-being. Eat a salad for lunch, clean your home, and do a fun exercise. Turn your phone off while in bed, and keep a daily journal. Rest assured that you will feel better than ever before and motivated to make further changes.
